Track Talk: It’s a welcome return to classic speedway site

It’s another Grand Prix weekend – just a week after the last round.

Yes, we’re in Denmark and a welcome return to Vojens for the Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix where a crowd of over 15,000 are expected.

Vojens has seen many memorable meetings down the years. Cradley legend Erik Gundersen won the last of his three world titles there in 1988 and it was also the venue for the last-ever one-off World Final in 1994. It’s very much the home of Danish speedway but the Grand Prix moved away from there in 2015 to a football stadium, CASA Arena Horsens – incidentally home to AC Horsens, who are managed by former Kidderminster Harriers player Bo Henriksen.

And whilst the CASA Arena is impressive, there’s a touch of romance about going back to Vojens because of its heritage.

I know since Jacob Olsen – who had a brief spell with Wolverhampton in the mid-90s – took over the reins there a lot of improvements have been carried out to the venue. And there’s little doubt the success of home hero Leon Madsen this season has enhanced ticket sales, the place will be packed. All week the covers have been down. The covers were designed by the legendary Ole Olsen back in 2008 and have saved meetings there down the years. It still frustrates me when some promoters refuse to even look seriously into covers.

Let’s hope we have a great night of racing with Madsen and Bartosz Zmarzlik battling it out for the world title. After this round there’s only two to go – and the next stop is Cardiff and the Principality Stadium for the British SGP. It’s on Saturday September 21 with a 5pm start and there will no doubt be plenty of support for Wolves favourites Freddie Lindgren and, of course, Tai Woffinden. Tonight’s Danish GP is live on BT Sport from 6pm.

Cradley round off their home league programme on Monday when we face Kent at Monmore.

And I’ve received several social media questions wondering whether this could be the last ever league meeting raced by the Heathens.

The simple answer is the same as every other season – we cannot offer any guarantees.

With no permanent track of our own once again we are in the hands of Wolverhampton and the structure of the league, which always puts us on the back foot unfortunately. We also have a Knockout Cup semi-final against Belle Vue the following Monday and we are also expecting to make an announcement about the Golden Hammer at Monday’s meeting. The lads have been through a tough time so need support on Monday night to show them how much Heathens fans are right behind them. We’ve been pleased with crowd levels again this season and we thank everyone for their support.

Finally an update on the evening with TT legends John McGuinness and Dean Harrison at the Cleveland Arms pub on Stow Heath Lane.

The event, which I’m hosting, is on Thursday November 21 and all VIP tickets have now sold out – standard £12.50 tickets remain and are on sale at the venue or by calling 01902 451021. See you there, bike fans!
