Track Talk: Woffinden wants to earn his place on the track

By Nigel Pearson | Speedway | Published:

I’ve spent a bit of time with reigning world champion Tai Woffinden here in Poland over the last 48 hours.

Tai Woffinden

One thing that is clear is he hates being off the bike – he’s frustrated and bored after having two months out.

He’s a natural born racer. I wasn’t completely surprised when he announced he would ride last night in the Wroclaw qualifying for tonight’s Grand Prix.

My slight concern is about his race fitness. You never know, he may make starts tonight and get ahead of the rest, but that’s a tall order against razor sharp riders who are bang in form chasing the world title.

He told me on Thursday night he wants to qualify for next year in the top eight rather than relying on a pick. He accepts his title defence is over but wants to at least take some consolation from the season.

Wroclaw is his home track here in Poland and has been for seven years, so there is that to his advantage.

And if enthusiasm is anything to go by, he will score points. I wish him well.

A reminder you can catch all the action on BT Sport tonight with the racing starting at 6.04pm UK time.

Wroclaw is a beautiful place and it’s a delight to be here. The centre is brilliant with great architecture and, of course, bars and restaurants. I’d recommend a trip here next year to any speedway fan.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton are back in business on Monday against Belle Vue at Monmore.

Club bosses work hard to encourage a younger audience and it’s kids for free during the school holidays.

Speedway is great for all of you parents looking to take the kids out for a different evening, they’ll love the smell, the sound, the thrills and spills.

And whenever Wolves and Belle Vue face each other it’s always a good meeting.

Aces have already won at Monmore once this season – Parrys International Wolves will be keen to avoid a repeat.

It should be a cracker.
