Hughes, who is the sports manager at Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, and Wall Heath TC chairman Hyde were a scratch pair who only came together days before the entry deadline when their prospective partners couldn’t make the competition.

And although they have played on the same team for Staffordshire they had never played doubles together before.

But that hit it off straight away in Grade 1 International Tennis Federation tournament, which was held at the Tipton Sports Academy.

The event comprised of events for men and women in age groups from 35 and over up to 85 and over, and saw former British number No.1 and Wimbledon semi-finalist Roger Taylor taking part.

The pair progressed smoothly to the 55s doubles final without dropping a set, beating two former championship-winning pairs along the way.

In the final, they proved too strong for Cambridgeshire duo Alan Jordan and Scott Martin, winning 6-2, 6-3.

Hughes admitted the competitive instincts soon kicked in once they stepped out on court.

“It was great fun linking up with Adrian for the week, and even better when we progressed through the draw and ended up winning the final,” he said. “I am always encouraging players of all ages at WLTSC to get on court and enjoy some competitive tennis and once we got out on court all those competitive instincts kicked in.

“It is particularly pleasing for Adrian and myself to be flying the flag for two really good clubs in Staffordshire, and hopefully showing that you are never too old to enjoy some success!”

Hyde was equally delighted by their success, saying: “It was great to partner Marc in such a wonderful event and see so many senior players still enjoying the game and playing at such a good level.

“It’s fantastic to be British champions and we both value the benefits the game has given us.”
