The midfielder admits the side did not reach anywhere near the standards they have set for themselves so far this season.

The former Walsall and Brentford man refused to lay the blame at the cnages to the starting XI made by boss Skaven Bilic – instead stating a lack of energy cost them the chance to move back to the top of the Championship above Leeds.

“We have set a standard all season and we did not meet it,” admitted the 28-year-old. “We knew what was required, there were a number of things that contributed to why we didn’t get to the standard we have set but we got away with one.

“It is a bit of a compliment that we can play so badly and pick up points.”

He added: “We lacked a bit of energy, we didn’t show the fight they showed.

“The quality that we usually have wasn’t there.

“It wasn’t down to changes in personnel – which people might highlight. It was the just the starting XI, we didn’t start right and there was a domino effect.

“We spoke at half-time about what could be and we got a bit better in the second-hal but it was still nowhere near the standards we have set.

“But the good thing about this league is we can dust ourselves down and go again Saturday. Games come quick.”

Sawyers says they must now get back on track for the derby clash at Birmingham tomorrow.

“For the fans it’s a local one but we just want to win as many games and collect as many points as possible,” said Sawyers.

“We wanted all three at Wigan. We got one, which turned out to be bonus because our standards where nowhere near where they have been this season.

“I wouldn’t say it was a wake-up call because I don’t think anyone was ever getting carried away. I’d say it’s a lesson. We know what we are capable of, we have showed it all season.

“It’s one of those things, we are going to have bad days at the office when you play 46 games”
