Slaven Bilic: West Brom should have even more points

Slaven Bilic believes Albion should have more points on the board – despite sitting top of the Championship.

The Baggies’ last five games have seen them secure wins at Middlesbrough, Stoke and Hull, but draw at home to Barnsley and Charlton.

The draw against the Addicks was particularly hard to take with Lee Bowyer’s side wrongly awarded a penalty in stoppage time.

So while Bilic is pleased his side managed to stay unbeaten in the batch of games since the last international break, he is disappointed they didn’t acquire a few more points.

“On one hand I’m very pleased, on the other hand I’m always going to go back to that Charlton game,” the head coach said.

“With all credit to Charlton, it wasn’t them who took a couple of points from us, it was the decision. It wasn’t a penalty.

“We’ve had good form. A clean sheet again at Hull, which is also very important, not only for the keeper and the back four but for the whole team.

“I’ve told the guys: rest, enjoy, they deserve to physically and mentally rest.

“But unfortunately it’s a long, long way to go now, and we are in that position – everybody wants to knock you down when you’re on top. It’s sunshine when you’re on the top, but it’s also very windy!

“This is nothing, we’ve done nothing. We’ve done nothing. We are good yes, but we’ve done nothing. There’s a long way still to go.”

Having now secured three clean sheets in a row away from home, Albion have let in just five goals on their travels this season.

But they have conceded 12 at The Hawthorns.

Bilic, though, insists there is no reason why they have been more defensively sound on the road.

“If we knew the reason why (conceding more at home) we would sort it out at home also,” he said.

“It happens. I remember Middlesbrough, for example, had a couple of chances.

“They had better chances than Barnsley and we conceded two. But Barnsley took their chances.

“I wouldn’t say we are lucky away – QPR, I don’t remember one chance they had.

“Middlesbrough had a couple. Stoke maybe had one. There is no pattern. Away from home we are also trying to have the ball and be active.

“It’s not that away from home we sit and we don’t allow the opponent a chance or space and we going to score if we score. It’s the same game plan.”
