Dan Scarr: Let's take Walsall form into the league

Saddlers centre-back Dan Scarr says the team must build on their EFL Trophy heroics and take their form into the league clash with Port Vale.

The defender sealed a second-half comeback for Walsall on Tuesday night as his added-time strike earned the club a 3-2 win over Chelsea Under-21s.

It was the club’s third win in seven games in a period of time where they’ve only lost once.

It came off the back of a six-game losing streak and Scarr says the team must carry that win into tomorrow’s league clash at Vale Park.

“A win in football is only good if you can carry it forward into the next game and build the momentum,” he said.

“We need to start having good little runs now in the league so that we can push on and get some points on the board.

“Coming from behind against a good Chelsea side is good for us and hopefully we can now take this confidence into Saturday’s game against Port Vale and replicate what we did in the second half.

“If we start the game against Port Vale at the weekend like we did in the second half against Chelsea, then I don’t think many teams will be able to live with us.

“If you look at games like the Forest Green Rovers league match where we took our game to them and we pressed them high up and got in their faces, I don’t think many teams are able to live with that.”

Meanwhile, assistant manager Brian Dutton says the team need to start ‘entertaining’ the fans as they bid to add more points to their league tally.

“We’ve had a real tough start to life at Walsall,” he said. “There’s been no springboard in terms of momentum, it’s not got going.

“The fans have been great from the first game of the season, but we haven’t done enough to entertain them.

“We’ve ground out performances and we’ve tried to get wins the ugly way to breed confidence.

“But unfortunately we haven’t had that springboard and that momentum.

“We haven’t given the fans anything to cheer about.

“So hopefully with these couple of wins in the cup and the win over Cambridge, hopefully now it can be a springboard for us to get some momentum in the league.

“That’s what we need, we need momentum, we need confidence.

“And then comes the entertainment.

“We need that and we need the turning point.

“There’s a lot of tired legs, we’ve had a really busy schedule.

“We haven’t so much rotated the squad, it’s been quite settled with key players playing in those games.

“So we have to really concentrate on the recovery side of the game and hopefully go into the Port Vale fixture feeling semi fresh so we can make a good account of ourselves and try and pick up points.”

Callum Cockerill-Mollett sustained a potentially serious injury in the Chelsea game and with Cameron Pring still out injured, it leaves a gap to fill at left-back.

Centre-back Zak Jules has played in left-back at times this season, but the defender hasn’t featured for the club since he was hauled off after 20 minutes in the 2-2 draw to Darlington in the FA Cup.

And Dutton confirmed the defender was fit, but that he was being kept out of the side due to Cockerill-Mollett’s impressive form.

“Jules is fit, he’s just come out of the side because Callum has done so well in that position of late,” he added.

“Pring is continuing his rehab and he’s nearly back on the grass, so fingers crossed he won’t be too long.”
