The hosts were lucky to escape as early as the first minute.

Will Whieldon burst through on goal but was dragged back by Michael Grogan who only saw a yellow card. The resultant free kick from Whieldon seemed to strike the hand of a defender in the wall right on the penalty spot.

The first half was limited on good goal mouth chances as defences were on top.

Just after the hour, Chasetown took the lead. Whieldon played the ball through and Danny Cocks got there before keeper Owen Wheeler. Cocks took the ball beyond the keeper and fired into an empty net from a wide angle.

Chasetown doubled their lead in the 75th minute. Substitute Jazz Luckie struck the Widnes post and the rebound fell to Tom Hill whose first effort was saved by Wheeler, his second hit the post but he headed home at the third attempt.

The Scholars deservedly made it 3-0 when Jimmy O'Neill played it through to Hill whose shot was saved by Wheeler but the ball rebounded off Hill into an empty net.
