The Wolverhampton & Bilston AC athlete was pipped to victory in heat six by Canadian Aaron Brown, but his time of 20.11 seconds was easily enough to advance.

British team-mate Adam Gemili led the way, winning heat one in a season’s best 20.06 seconds, while Zharnel Hughes also made it through to the semi-finals.

Francis, 24, races in the second of three semi-final races at 6.58pm this evening, with the top two from each – as well as the fastest two losers – going through to Tuesday night’s final.
