LETTER: Praise for Perton Library history event
Congratulations to Perton Library for organising an excellent local history event recently.
When local libraries are under pressure from financial cuts, this was a sterling effort.
As part of the local history event, there was a fascinating and impressive lecture by Angus Dunphy on the Dutch army who were stationed at Wrottesley Park from 1941-44.
When Holland was invaded, Dutch troops escaped and came to the UK, re-grouped into the Royal Netherlands Princess Irene Brigade and then returned to the battle.
Queen Wilhelmina visited Wrottesley Park regularly to rally her troops.
How many of us in Wolverhampton are aware of this interesting piece of local history?
The link between Wolverhampton and the Dutch has continued throughout the intervening years and each autumn a Dutch delegation visit Wolverhampton for a service to commemorate their soldiers who are buried at Jeffcock Road Cemetery.
It would be a fitting tribute to the thousands of Dutch troops who were based at the Wrottesley Park camp, if a plaque could be erected on the edge of the site
