Temporary traffic lights are in place at the junction of Brierley Hill Road and the A491 High Street while new traffic lights are installed.

The temporary lights are set to be in operation seven days a week until the end of March and will be manually operated at peak times in a bid to minimise disruption.

It is hoped the new smart controls will improve traffic flow and air quality by responding to traffic levels in real time.

Once the new signals are in place, further work will take place to link the signals between the High Street's junctions with Brierley Hill Road and "the cat" junction with Lawnswood Road and Blandford Drive.

Work is expected to continue until the end of March

Dudley Council said road markings and improvements have been finished on Brierley Hill Road since work began in January and the "bulk" of the changes to the High Street have also been completed.

The work is being funded by £1.5 million which the Government gave the council to tackle roadside nitrogen dioxide emissions in April 2019.

Changes to Castle Gate and Duncan Edwards Way have already been paid for by the funding.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, Dudley Council's cabinet member for environmental, highways and street services, said: "We began this final phase of work in January, and the improvements to the road surfaces and markings are already clear to see.

"This next element will allow us to bring in the most up to date and intelligent traffic controls we can.

"It will involve some disruption to motorists, but we hope that they will bear with us while we make these essential improvements and I would like to thank our residents for their patience during this programme."

The £1.5 million is from a joint grant from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and the Department for Transport.
