City MP Stuart Anderson said he had met with Chancellor Sajid Javid who remained committed to making it a reality.

It comes after the station, which would connect the village with Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Telford, was supported by nearly three-quarters of residents.

Mr Anderson said: “Tettenhall Railway Station is a high priority of mine and something we’ve really been pushing for.

“I’ve spoken to the Chancellor about it – I had breakfast with him shortly before we broke up – and he supports it.

“I’m excited to see this happen and the Government are 100 per cent behind it.

“Not just that, he was also talking about the investment they are putting in across the whole of Wolverhampton.”

The idea was initially floated by South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson and has been brought forward by Mayor Andy Street and the newly-elected Wolverhampton South West MP.

They have both pledged to take the campaign forward by securing an official feasibility study, building a business case and then bidding for funding.

It comes amid plans to re-open stations in Darlaston, Willenhall and Aldridge.

Tettenhall station would be the first stop after trains leave Wolverhampton, before travelling on to Bilbrook and Codsall.
