A contraflow system which has been in place between Junction 14 for Stafford North and 15 for Stoke on the northbound carriageway, as part of a long-running project to create a smart motorway, will be moved to between Junction 13 for Stafford and 14.

And in the new year a contraflow will be introduced again between junctions 15 and 14 but in the southbound carriageway.

Closures will be in place from Thursday until Monday, from 9pm until 6am, between Junctions 15 and 14 southbound.

More closures will then follow overnight from Monday until Saturday, November 23 from Junction 14 to 13 southbound.

More will be in place during December and January, Highways England said.

A 19-mile stretch of the motorway is being upgraded which has seen traffic moving at a reduced speed.

As well as moving the contraflow, Highways England said motorway closures are also necessary to allow the steel central reservation to be replaced with new concrete safety barriers.
