Hundreds of holidaymakers had to wait outside while West Midlands Fire Service was scrambled to the scene just after 2pm.

Crews from two fire engines attended the airport to find smoke coming from a kitchen behind a bar, the fire service confirmed.

A spokeswoman for the service said: "It was nothing major. It was smoke coming from the kitchen of one of the bars."

People took to Twitter to share photographs and updates from the scene.

One person tweeted: "Just about to leave and the fire alarm goes off at Birmingham Airport evacuating the whole building. Great start to the holiday."
