West Midlands Fire Service had to cut the driver of one of the lorries out of the vehicle after he suffered serious injuries.

Two lorries crashed between Junction 9 for Wednesbury and Junction 8 for the M5 link at 3.40pm yesterday.

All four lanes of the busy southbound motorway were closed for a number of hours as a number of ambulances and air ambulances attended the scene.

Spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, Claire Brown, said: "Two ambulances, two paramedic officers, Hazardous Area Response Team paramedics, the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a MERIT doctor on board and the Critical Care Car from the Midlands Air Ambulance attended the scene.

"Two men from one of the lorries were injured and required treatment and one man, the driver, was trapped and had sustained serious injuries in the collision.

"Ambulance staff worked quickly with the fire service to release him from the vehicle.

"The man received advanced trauma care on scene before being taken by land ambulance on blue lights to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

"The second man, the passenger, was treated on scene for less serious injuries before being taken to Sandwell Hospital by land ambulance for further assessment and treatment."
