The plans for Corbett Meadow, Amblecote, were met with strong opposition during a public exhibition on Monday.

A petition had also amassed more than 1,000 signatures.

The green space, behind Corbett Outpatients Centre, was put forward for development by land-owners Dudley NHS Trust, which also runs Russells Hall Hospital.

This followed government guidance issued to NHS bodies that surplus land should be disposed of.

However after careful consideration, interested developers Countryside Properties has pulled out.

A spokesman said: "We respect the views of the local community and, having carefully considered their concerns, we have decided to withdraw our interest in the site.”

This has been welcomed by local residents.

Helen Cook, Amblecote History Society, said: "We may have won the first battle, but we have to win the war.

"There could well be another developer waiting to take on the opportunity, we must not be complacent."

The NHS trust's chief executive Diane Wake said: "We note Countryside Properties’ position with regard to their potential interest in the land at Corbett and we will continue to look at our options for this surplus land."
