Jan Britton has been appointed as managing director at Publica, which providers services on behalf of councils in Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.

Mr Britton left Sandwell Council in mysterious circumstances earlier this month and followed him taking a period of leave from the authority.

No official reason has been given as to why former chief executive Mr Britton left his £140,000-a-year role, although sources close to the council said the influence of officers over political matters has been called into question.

His departure follows a turbulent period at Sandwell Council which has had three leaders since February.

Mr Britton is due to start his new job in October and said: "Publica presents me with a fresh opportunity within local government and I’m really excited to be joining an ambitious organisation which is taking the opportunity to transform the way local services are delivered; offer wider career opportunities for its staff; and make an impact nationally.

"I look forward to meeting the staff, councillors, customers and other stakeholders over the coming months.”
