Sixty firefighters tackled the blaze at its peak, with around 1,000 tons of rubbish caught up in the flames in Ezekiel Leane, Short Heath.

Thick black smoke billowed high into the sky spreading out into a mushroom shape before gradually becoming lighter in colour as the flames were covered in water.

The smoke was seen more than 10 miles away in places such as Cannock, Sutton Coldfield, Bilston and Tividale.

The cause of the blaze, which started at around 12.30pm, is still being investigated.
