Walsall bin lorry crash left seriously injured car driver trapped for 40 minutes

A man was seriously injured in a crash with a bin lorry which left him trapped for around 40 minutes, the ambulance service has confirmed.

The man, aged in his 20s, was trapped after the crash in Leamore Lane in Leamore, Bloxwich, on Friday.

An air ambulance was sent to the scene and firefighters had to cut the driver out of the car before leaving him in the care of the ambulance service.

The car was left with major damage to its front end after it collided with the Walsall Council bin lorry and the debris-covered road was closed for more than five hours.

The extent of his injuries are not yet known but he was taken for treatment at the major trauma centre in Birmingham.

Police collision investigators examined the scene at length, but West Midlands Police is still yet to confirm whether anybody has been arrested or whether the investigation is continuing.

Murray McGregor, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "At 11.40am we were called to the junction of Water Reed Grove and Leamore Lane.

"We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford.

"It was a car and a bin lorry.

"The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was trapped for around 40 minutes.

"Ambulance staff worked with firefighters to extricate him.

"He suffered potentially serious injuries, was treated on the scene before being taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre at the QE.

"The doctor from the air ambulance travelled in the car."

The road was closed to traffic between the junctions of Odell Road and Darwin Road after the crash.

West Midlands Police has been contacted for a comment.
