Thousands raised for family of popular Stafford market trader Neville Scattergood
A Just Giving page launched in memory of a man who died after being struck by a tree in Stafford has already raised more than £3,000 for his family.
Neville Scattergood died after being hit by the falling tree on the Isabel Trail – a popular walking area off Eccleshall Road – on October 3.
The 58-year-old was previously a market trader in Stafford and had his own leather goods stall at St John's Market Hall for many years.
He also expanded the business to a locksmith and key cutting firm as well.
Tributes have been left on the Just Giving page set up by friends and family to help Mr Scattergood's wife Diane.
Friend Edith Bailey set up the online page just yesterday (Tues) with a target of £3,000 – but more than 100 people have already donated, raising £2,675 in just 24 hours.
Edith said: "Diane and Nev were married for 28 years.
"We would like to do anything in our power that can help her out through this extremely difficult time.
"They were a beautiful couple, still very much in love, something every couple can dream of, it is breaking all of our hearts to see them torn away from each other so soon, with so much ahead of them.
"Funerals are always a difficult subject but we want her to be able to give Nev the send off he deserves, so through this page we hope to help out with some expenditures."
South Staffordshire coroner Andrew Haigh has been notified of Mr Scattergood’s death.
A full inquest will be held soon to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police, paramedics and the and fire service descended on Eccleshall Road close to the cemetery at about 6.45am on October 3.
But Staffordshire Police have confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.
Health and safety inspectors from Staffordshire County Council have been visiting to assess the safety of the area.
The Isabel Trail still remains closed to the public and the Parkrun, which usually attracts more than 100 people, was cancelled last Saturday.
