Cooks, drivers and even bingo callers – just some of the roles volunteers could help fill to give elderly people a lifeline.

Bingo caller Marjorie Kelly MBE is appealing for volunteers

Wombourne Volunteer Bureau, which provides transport and day care for people in the area, is looking for new blood to help with its services.

Marjorie Kelly, who has been involved with the group since it was formed in 1973, says the group provides vital support for people in the village.

Mrs Kelly said volunteers could give as much or little time as they want.

“We’re looking for people to provide transport, either in our old cars, or in our ambulances,” she said.

“We’re also looking for cooks to help out for out Tuesday day care sessions.”

Mrs Kelley, aged 89, who was appointed an MBE in 2001, still acts as the bingo caller at the Thursday afternoon session.

The volunteer bureau, in Church Road, provides day-care activities five days a week, with luncheon clubs, craft classes, a stroke club, and support for the hard of hearing.

Volunteers also provide transport for people who might struggle to get out of the house, as well as regular day care activities at its base.
