The Plough, at School Road, Trysull, is believed to date back to at least the 17th century, but is now considered “redundant”, a report to South Staffordshire Council’s planning committee said.

On Tuesday committee members gave the go-ahead for the pub building to be converted into five homes, with a further nine properties to be built in its grounds.

But a number of objections were received from residents, raising concerns about overdevelopment of the site, the development’s impact on a listed building and loss of Green Belt land.

The development is set to include four affordable homes, agent Otto de Weijer told the the meeting.

He added: “We are advised there are no affordable homes within the parish. There will be no building on the Green Belt, only gardens in five of the proposed dwellings.

“Highways have raised no objections to the proposal and the scheme includes an extension to the existing footpath from the site to the school.”

Andrew Hingley-Smith, who spoke against the application, said however: “The proposed development will extend beyond the development boundary. The additional development will have a detrimental impact on a Grade II Listed building – it will simply destroy the setting.

“Residents do not consider this to constitute an acceptable form of development.”

Committee member Councillor Lin Hingley said: “I know Trysull very well and where these houses are going to be it’s very windy – you have to be very careful driving along there. I have concerns about people walking on that road – there is an elderly home just by the school.”

But the application was recommended for approval by planning officers – and the committee voted to grant permission.
