The 45-metre high steel 'bunker bay' was razed to the ground at 10am today.

After the explosives were let off and the bunker bay crashed to the floor, a dust cloud rose from the ground, covering the cooling towers.

The demolition of the site is set to make way for 2,300 homes, housing for the elderly, commercial buildings and a primary school.

Cannock Chase District Council and Lichfield District Council have both approved the outline planning application, but a reserved matters application with the finer details will have to be submitted at a later date.

The other main structures, including the rest of the boiler house, chimney and cooling towers are scheduled for controlled collapse in 2020. The complete demolition of the site is expected in 2021.
