Cannock's Electric Palace cinema evacuated after fire

Cinema-goers were evacuated from a well known Cannock venue after a fire was started deliberately.

Arsonists are thought to be behind a blaze which started behind The Electric Palace cinema on Tuesday night.

Staff were forced to evacuate the building as emergency services arrived at around 8.45pm.

A PCSO spotted smoke rising from the rear of the cinema in Walsall Road.

Everyone inside was evacuated safely, police confirmed.

Five firefighters from Cannock station arrived to put out the fire.

It is unclear at this stage where the fire originated, although police believe it was started close to the rear of a cinema screen.

The blaze was put out around 9.10pm, said Staffordshire Fire Service.

Cannock Police tweeted: "[A] PCSO alerted cinema staff to smoke emerging from the building and located two separate fires deliberately started at the back of a screen."

Anyone with any information is asked to ring 101 quoting incident 814 of July 16.
