The southbound carriageway was left congested following the breakdown between Junction 9 for Wednesbury and Junction 8 for the M5 at around 11.35am.

A spokesman for Live Traffic M6 posted a message on social media, saying that one lane was closed and traffic was expected to get back to normal around 12.45pm.

The message read: "There is one of three lanes closed.

"Normal traffic conditions are expected between 12.45pm and 1pm on March 18."

It was the second time in the space of a few hours that a stranded car had caused delays.

First reported by transport for West Midlands t around 7.30am, a stretch of the northbound carriageway between Junction 8 and 9 was affected.

One lane of four was closed, but due to the volume of traffic at that time of the morning, it caused 30 minute delays.

Traffic camera images showed queues building up at Junction 9 for Wednesbury. There was reportedly four miles of congestion.

Drivers were urged to expect "congestion" and were told to allow extra time for their journeys.

As a result there were also long delays on the M5 northbound.

The M6 eventually reopened at around 8.45am but residual tailbacks continued for a while afterwards.
