Man arrested after severe bedroom fire in Tipton

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a severe fire at a home in Tipton.

The fire happened in Fisher Street, Great Bridge

Firefighters were called to Fisher Street in Great Bridge at about 8.15am today after the blaze broke out in the bedroom of a second-floor maisonette.

There were 10 firefighters on the scene tackling the flames.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service Neil Spencer said: "A man, in his mid-thirties, was led to safety by firefighters and was assessed by paramedics.

"A woman of the same property also managed to get herself out before we arrived.

"The fire was confined to the bedroom but caused about 20 per cent of damage – all of the room also suffered smoke damage."

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

West Midlands Police said a 36-year-old man has been arrested for arson in connection with the blaze.

He remains in custody and enquires are ongoing.
