Bryan and Rita Castle first met as children at school in Smethwick, then were reunited in the Red Cow Pub more than a decade later.

Mrs Castle, 83, said: "We were about 11 when we met at Crocketts Lane school, before we went to different secondary schools.

"We didn't really stay in touch and then met again in the Red Cow when we were in our early 20s.

"We started chatting and got married two years later on August 15 in Holy Trinity Smethwick."

After school Mr Castle, 84, went into the Army for two years, while Mrs Castle worked in her mother's shop.

Mr Castle said: "I was a trainee electrician in between school and the Army, but when I came out I couldn't get a job so I worked for Rock House Steels as a millwright."

The pair now have two children and three grandchildren.

"We moved to Great Barr just after we got married in 1959," Mr Castle added.

"I'd say the secret to a long marriage is give and take. And we get on so well together and help each other out."

The pair held a party at the Horse and Jockey Pub in Sutton Coldfield on Saturday with their family to mark the occasion.
