Rubbish piling up outside homes after 'unofficial' bin strike

Rubbish is piling up outside homes across Sandwell after bin collectors went on an "unofficial" strike in the borough.

Some bin collectors have gone on strike in Sandwell

A number of bin men and women have taken industrial action in protest over their collection rounds being rescheduled.

Sandwell Council has said not all crews are striking, and any bins not collected will be picked up as soon as possible.

But people are not happy – with many left with rubbish heaped outside their homes.

Resident Natalie Wall said: "Lots of people are saying they have been waiting a week now and still no collection so these constant promises of 'they will be collected' mean very little.

"The weather will only make things worse by blowing the bins over and what about all the additional rubbish now in bags. Will those be taken too?"

Janine Aldridge, from Rowley Regis, added: "Are they still going empty the bins when they overflow as it's their fault for not emptying them?

"Ours have been two days now and was the same last week."

A spokesman for Sandwell Council said: "We are experiencing a high number of missed bin collections throughout the borough.

"This is due to unofficial industrial action being undertaken by some members of staff in response to a recent rescheduling of collection rounds.

"Whilst this action is not being undertaken by all collection crews, we would ask residents whose bins are not emptied on their scheduled collection day to leave their bins at their normal collection point.

"We will get these bins collected as soon as possible.

"Sandwell Council and our waste partner Serco will continue to work together to resolve this matter and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to our residents."
