Officers were called to the scene in Simms Lane just before 10.30am, where a man in his 80s had been seriously injured after a car mounted the pavement and hit him.

Sadly, the man died at the scene.

West Midlands Police says the driver of the Seat Leon which struck the man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after originally fleeing the scene.

The smash took place at the junction of Simms Lane and Hill Street, near the Link Academy and former Crown public house.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “I am urging anyone who was on the road and saw what happened to contact us if they have not already done so.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and I’d ask anyone who may have dash cam footage to speak to us at the earliest opportunity.

“My thoughts go out to the family of the man who tragically lost his life this morning and specialist officers will now be supporting them at this difficult time.”

A large police cordon remained in place with a blue forensic tent inside this afternoon. Evidence markers could also be seen lining the street.

One man said: “The person who was driving the white car hit the grass verge and hit a man waiting at the bus stop I was told.

“The poor man, he was just waiting for the bus.”

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I live across the road from where it happened. We didn’t hear anything until I saw all the commotion outside.

“I just heard there had been a crash, I don’t know anything else.

“It’s normally such a quiet road.”

A man, who only gave his name as Martin, said: “I have been told a man has been hit by a car. It’s awful.

“My thoughts are with him and his family.”

Motorists were advised to avoid the scene while emergency services were there.

One resident said: “I just heard all the sirens coming down the street, then all the emergency services arrived.

“I did not hear anything prior to that.

“I hope the poor man is ok, it’s just shocking.

“I heard the helicopter around as well”

Another said: “I did not hear anything about it until the police knocked the door and told us.

“It’s terrible.”

Anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101, quoting incident number 1135 of March 7.
