Black Country gives refuge to hundreds of Afghans
The Black Country has taken in hundreds of Afghans, new figures show.
The news comes as a humanitarian organisation warns the Government is failing vulnerable Afghan refugees.
In response to the Taliban retaking control of the country, the Government launched two schemes to relocate Afghan citizens in 2021 and 2022.
These schemes have a particular focus on helping those who worked with the UK during the war in Afghanistan, and vulnerable groups.
New figures from the Home Office show more than 20,000 Afghans fleeing the conflict have settled in the UK through the two schemes, at the end of June.
Of those:
136 lived in Wolverhampton – an increase from the 125 living in the area in March.
113 lived in Walsall – the same number as were living in the area in March.
96 lived in Sandwell – fewer than the 105 living in the area in March.
99 lived in Dudley – an increase from the 94 living in the area in March.
14 lived in South Staffordshire – a small increase from the 12 living in the area in March.
22 lived in Cannock Chase – an increase from the 15 living in the area in March.
