Woman critically injured after being hit by car near Birmingham's Broad Street

A man was arrested after a woman was critically injured after being hit by a car in Birmingham.

The crash happened on St Martin's Street at the junction with Tennant Street, at Five Ways, on Sunday night.

A woman in her 50s was taken to hospital with serious head injuries and remains in a critical condition today.

The road, close to Broad Street, was closed after the crash at 5pm.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

He was later released under investigation, said West Midlands Police.

Tennant Street was closed off between the junctions with Bishopgate Street and Islington Row Middleway in the aftermath.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said the victim was treated at the scene before being taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
