WATCH: Long queues snake around Black Country supermarket car parks

Shoppers across the Black Country and Staffordshire have been keeping their distance as they queue outside supermarkets.

Queues have stretched around car parks as shops limit the amount of people allowed inside and ensure those waiting are kept at least two metres apart.

The scenes are in stark contrast to the hectic situations seen outside supermarkets across the region last week.

Like many stores, Asda in Molineux Way, Wolverhampton, has closed off a large part of the car park to allow the queue to snake up and down the empty bays.

Marshalls have been tasked with ensuring customers wait their turn while keeping safely apart from each other.

There have also been long queues at Asda Queslett in Great Barr, while many customers have been wearing protective face masks and gloves in a bid to protect themselves from Covid-19.

As well as keeping queueing customers apart, shops have introduced a range of measures such as installing protective screens at tills and putting safe-distance markers on the floor.

Asda is now asking shoppers to only touch items they want to purchase and is offering hand sanitiser at the entrance and exit of stores. Trolleys, baskets and surfaces are also being cleaned far more regularly.

Asda is also following Morrison's in installing perspex screens at checkouts, while most busy shops are now operating a one in, one out policy.

Most major supermarket chains are also dedicating a period at the start of each day for the elderly and vulnerable and for NHS and social care workers.
