Rainbow spreads message of joy from Wolverhampton school to key workers
A school has created a unique tribute to key workers to help raise community spirits
The pupils and teachers of Oak Meadow Primary School, in Ashmore Park, Wolverhampton, have created a giant rainbow with a collage effect from shiny paper and laminate.
The rainbow, which is around six-foot high, can be seen at the junction of Lichfield Road and Peacock Avenue, near the school.
Paul Lane, senior leader at the school, said the idea came as an idea from the staff and the pupils at the school.
He said: “They wanted to do something to recognise the outstanding workers, the NHS workers at New Cross and, also, for our community to show solidarity.
“We are very privileged to have parents in our community who work at New Cross and for other emergency services and we see it as a privilege to be able to look after those children at the moment.
“It was one of those things in the first week that we were together with the children of key workers at the school.
“We wanted to do something really positive, and we tried to make it as big and as bright as possible to be a beacon of hope for the community.”
The rainbow will be on display outside the school for the foreseeable future and Paul mentioned that the light shining on it really brought out the colours of the rainbow. He said it was a privilege to be able to create something like this to support the emergency services and key workers.
He said: “We have the honour and privilege of having the responsibility and the commitment to look after the children of those key workers, so it’s nice to pay tribute to those people out there.
“It’s just about spreading that message of positivity as far and wide as possible.
“The rainbow will be there as long as the community needs it to be there as we see ourselves as the hub of the community.” The school has also started a 1,000 picture challenge on Twitter, encouraging people to post a picture on the social media site of themselves posing in front of the rainbow.
