Sat results reveal how primary schools are performing across Dudley, Sandwell, Staffordshire, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

Three areas in the Black Country and Staffordshire fell below the national average in the percentage of primary school pupils who met Government targets in the latest Sat results.

Of 152 local authorities in England, Dudley ranked 141st, while Walsall was at 125th, Sandwell was 109th, Wolverhampton was 72nd and Staffordshire was 69th.

Dudley’s rank had dropped from 138th last year, while Walsall rose from 147th, Sandwell rose from 118th, Wolverhampton rose from 108th and Staffordshire dropped from 57th.

Across Dudley, 58 per cent of pupils met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, compared to a national average of 64 per cent, according to figures from the Department for Education.

And in Sandwell and Walsall the scores also fell below the national average, with 61 per cent in both areas.

But in Wolverhampton and Staffordshire, 65 per cent of Year 6 pupils hit the targets.

Schools are also awarded scores reflecting their pupils’ progress between KS1 and KS2 exams in three key subjects, taken at the ages of seven and 11.

Pupils in Dudley and Staffordshire were also below average in progress in their reading, writing and maths.

While pupils in Walsall were average in their progress in reading and maths and below average in writing, and Sandwell pupils were below average in progress in their reading, above average in writing progress and average in maths.

Wolverhampton pupils were above average in progress in the three areas. Pupils are expected to achieve scores of at least 100 in their Key Stage 2 exams.

Nationally, pupils scored on average 105 in reading and 104 in maths.

In Wolverhampton the average scores were the same as the national averages, while in Dudley the average for reading was 104 and 103 in maths, in Sandwell both averages were 104, in Walsall it was 104 for both and in Staffordshire it was 105 for reading and 104 for maths.

And pupils achieving more than 110 in their exams were classed as achieving a ‘higher standard’.

Across Staffordshire and Wolverhampton this was nine per cent, in Sandwell it was eight per cent and in Walsall and Dudley it was seven per cent.

Wolverhampton

The percentage of Wolverhampton primary school pupils who met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths is higher than the national average for the very first time.

Across the city, 65 per cent of Year 6 pupils who sat this year’s Sats met Government targets in all three areas, while 64 per cent of pupils did so across England, according to new figures from the Department for Education.

Wolverhampton pupils were also above average in progress in their reading, writing and maths. This is the third year in succession progress has been above average across Key Stage 2 in Wolverhampton.

And nine per cent of pupils achieved a ‘higher standard’. The school with the highest number of pupils meeting the expected standard in the three areas was Manor Primary School in Bilston, with 97 per cent, while at the other end of the scale, 32 per cent of pupils at Wood End Primary School in Wood End Road met the target.

At one school – Northwood Park Primary School – none of the pupils met all three targets as its maths results were annulled by the Standards and Testing Agency.

And the school with the best average progress scores across the three subjects was Hill Avenue Academy, in Lanesfield, while Wood End Primary School was also at the bottom end for the progress rankings.

Councillor Lynne Moran, Wolverhampton council’s cabinet member for education and skills, said: “Year 6 pupils have performed exceptionally well at Key Stage 2 this year, and I would like to congratulate everyone on this splendid achievement.

“Once again, we are one of the best performing areas in the West Midlands, while the fact that Wolverhampton has also moved above the national average for the first time is an important milestone for us.”

Pupils across Wolverhampton achieved Key Stage 2 results broadly in line with other places in England. The local authority ranked 72nd of England’s 152 authorities. This was a rise from 108th in 2016-17.

Dudley

Dudley dropped to 141st out of 152 local authorities across England in the national league tables.

Across the borough, the percentage of Year 6 pupils who took this year’s Sats and met Government targets in reading, writing and maths was 58 per cent – the lowest score in the Black Country and Staffordshire.

Dudley pupils were also below average in progress in their reading, writing and maths. Seven per cent of pupils achieved a ‘higher standard’.

Councillor Sue Ridney, cabinet member for children’s services, said the council will continue working to raise standards.

She said: “As a council we are committed to improving outcomes for all pupils and this is reflected in this year’s results, which continue to improve on previous years.

“The percentage of pupils achieving the expected standard for all results was three per cent higher than in 2017.

“Nevertheless, we will continue working hard to raise standards further and maintain that improvement journey in the borough.”

Sandwell

The borough’s primary schools rose nine places among the national league tables in the latest results.

This places Sandwell 109th among England’s 152 authorities.

A total of 61 per cent of Year 6 pupils across the borough met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, according to the latest figures. Sandwell pupils were below average in progress in their reading, above average in progress in writing and average in maths progress.

And eight per cent of pupils achieved a ‘higher standard’.

Councillor Simon Hackett, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “We are a very ambitious council and we want all of our children at schools and academies to do the best they can.

“It’s very important our children do well in reading, writing and mathematics at primary school.

“It’s good to see that the performance of our children in Sandwell primary schools has improved again and the gap to national performance has decreased this year.”

Walsall

Walsall climbed 22 places to 125th in the primary school national league tables.

The percentage of Year 6 pupils who took this year’s Sats and met Government targets in all three areas of reading, writing and maths was 61 per cent.

Walsall pupils were also average in their progress in reading and maths and below average in writing, according to the figures from the Department for Education.

Councillor Chris Towe, portfolio holder for education and skills said: “The progress of our young people has improved across all subjects in 2018 and for maths, we are above the national benchmark.

"Walsall is ranked 125th out of 152 local authorities – an improvement of 24 places from last year’s ranking, which I’m really pleased with.”

The school with the highest percentage of pupils who met the expected standard across the three subjects was St Anne’s Catholic Primary School, in Sutton Coldfield, with 96 per cent.

While the school with the lowest score was All Saints National Academy, in High Street, with 19 per cent.

Staffordshire

Staffordshire’s primary school results were better than more than half of local authorities nationally – despite dropping 12 places in the national league tables.

The borough has placed 69th among 152 local authorities nationally in the latest figures after the Year 6 Sat exams.

Philip White, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for learning and employability, said: “We work closely with heads and governors at the maintained schools to maintain and improve standards.”

65 per cent of pupils across Staffordshire met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, one per cent higher than the national average.

Every pupil who took the exams at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, in Wharf Lane met the expected standard, putting it top in Staffordshire, while the bottom was Kingfisher Academy, in Burton-on-Trent on 25 per cent.
