Modern slavery arrests as women rescued from Handsworth house

Two people were arrested on suspicion of modern slavery at a house where women are believed to have been sexually exploited.

A 45-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were arrested at a house in Regent Road, Handsworth, yesterday afternoon.

A number of women who are believed to be victims of sexual exploitation were removed from the house and have been safeguarded, West Midlands Police said.

Officers were still at the house on Friday morning after the initial raid was carried out just before 3.30pm on Thursday.

Regent Road is a residential street that runs between Sandwell Road and Rookery Road and the house that was raided is next to the junction with Carlton Avenue.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We’ve arrested two people on suspicion of modern slavery offences in Handsworth, Birmingham.

"Officers attended a property on Regent Road just before 3.30pm yesterday, after a concern for safety was raised in relation to its occupants.

"We’ve arrested a 45-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman on suspicion of modern slavery offences and they remain in custody this afternoon .

"A number of women at the address have been safeguarded following information indicating that they were being sexually exploited.
