Teen tearaway spared jail after injuring motorist in father's BMW
A teenage tearaway, who careered over a junction into another car badly injuring its driver, has been spared jail.
Jarell Jones, aged 19, was uninsured at the wheel of his father’s BMW and being pursued by a marked police car after failing to stop at 3.30am on June 22 last year, a judge heard.
He was travelling at over 70mph down Stone Street towards its junction with Oldbury Ringway – too fast to brake and give way when he got there, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told
The BMW ploughed into the side of a passing VW Golf, sending it into the central reservation where it almost turned over before hitting a lamppost and coming to rest on the footpath, said Ms Sally Cairns, prosecuting.
The impact wrote off the £14,000 car and fractured a vertebrae in the back of its driver Mohammed Chaudhry who was on his way home from work.
Jones ran off without doing anything to help or check the condition of the other motorist, the court heard.
Police quickly traced Jones, who is employed as a BMW apprentice, and had borrowed the vehicle to go to a party because his own car was being repaired but had no trace of alcohol or drugs.
Mr Oliver Woolhouse, defending, said: “This was a terrible decision made in the heat of the moment and he collided with the Golf 18 seconds later.”
Jones, from Apollo Road, Oldbury, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury through dangerous driving and having no insurance.
He was given 16 months detention suspended for two years with 200 hours unpaid work, a three-year driving ban, a three-month night time curfew and was ordered to pay £5,000 compensation.
