Pc Claire Bond suffered life-changing injuries to her legs when she was run down while trying to stop disqualified driver Gurajdeep Malhi from driving into runners who were competing in the race on September 23 last year.

She was crushed against a fence, which broke both her legs, and then run over while she was on the floor unable to move.

Her colleague, Pc Dave Mullins, pulled her to safety and helped stop any further injuries.

As part of her recovery, and to mark the anniversary of the attack, Claire has decided to do some good and has signed up to complete the Stafford 10K on September 22 and raise money for the Care of Police Survivors charity.

She will be accompanied by her husband Darren and Pc Mullins among others.

Claire said: “I suffered life-changing injuries and after three operations and two visits to Harrogate Police Treatment Centre, I am finally trying to move forward with both my physical and mental recovery.

“The sentencing took place on September 2 at Stafford Crown Court, where I had the opportunity to read out my victim personal statement and faced the offender for the first time since the incident. Now I don’t have that hanging over me, my focus will be on my recovery.

“I have taken a bit of a hit to my recovery over the past few weeks with what has happened to both Pc Phillips who was run down using his own police car in Moseley, Birmingham, and the tragic death of Pc Harper in Reading it was all just a bit too close to home and I struggled.

“That’s why I have decided that a better way to approach the anniversary is to do some good so I have signed up to complete the Stafford 10K myself this year. It’s on 22 September 2019 and I’ll be doing it to raise some money for Care of Police Survivors, a great charity that does brilliant work.

“I may not be able to walk the entire 10k, but as long as I can get up and walk the last kilometre on my feet and cross the finish line with Dave I will be happy.

Supt Carl Ratcliffe said: "It’s great to see that Claire is at the stage in her recovery where she can take part in the Stafford 10k and typically, she is putting others before herself in taking part to raise funds for such a worthwhile cause.

“Claire continues to make us all feel proud of her determination and courage. We can’t wait to see her cross the finishing line.’’

Drug dealer Gurajdeep Malhi, who mowed down Pc Bond, was jailed for 12 years and nine months, while his partner Lucy Bullmore was jailed for two years.
