Knifeman tried to kill ex-wife then called 999 and described the stabbing
A man who called 999 and described how he stabbed his ex-wife multiple times has been locked up for her attempted murder.
Richard Austin, 47, stabbed his former spouse several times in the upper body, leg and hand during a violent outburst in Birmingham earlier this year.
Austin launched the attack shortly after arranging for a taxi to collect her from his Erdington home during the early hours of January 29.
Then, just after 3am, he called 999 asking for an ambulance and calmly described to the operator how he had stabbed the woman several times.
When police officers arrived, Austin admitted what he'd just done and said he had put the knife in a bin.
The victim was taken to hospital having suffered stab wounds to her abdomen, shoulder, leg and hand and a slash mark to her neck.
Seven months on and she is still struggling to come to terms with the physical and mental trauma she experienced, West Midlands Police said.
Austin, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to life in prison at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.
He will serve a minimum of five years and be on licence for life after his release, while he is also now the subject of an indefinite restraining order.
Detective Constable Maria Watts, from West Midlands Police's public protection team, said: "This was a horrifying domestic attack which was understandably very traumatic for the whole family.
“Following years of domestic abuse, Austin’s actions culminated in a callous and dangerous attack.
“I hope today’s outcome offers some comfort to the victim and her family who have been extremely brave throughout the investigation."
