The incident happened on the towpath near Essex Bridge in Great Haywood on Tuesday night at around 7pm.

The woman, in her early 20s, was jogging along the path from the direction of Little Haywood, when she was pushed hard from behind by two young men and fell to the floor – suffering cuts and bruises and swelling to her head.

Her headphones were also smashed and her clothing torn.

After the assault, the woman ran away and was helped by people on a nearby narrowboat.

Staffordshire Police has now launched an appeal for information – and has urged anyone who saw anything or recognises the description of the two men to contact them.

A police spokesman said: "The suspects are described as teenagers, of skinny build, with mousey-brown hair, both wearing dark clothing with hoods up.

"One of them, who had a spotty complexion, was riding a silver bike. The other was riding a black bike with silver suspension."

Anyone with information can call Staffordshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting incident reference number 907 of August 13.
