Man in court over a police assault in Penn

A man has appeared in court after two police officers were injured during shop raids in Wolverhampton.

Officers arrived at Costcutter, on Penn Road, in Penn, at 8.30pm on Thursday, to reports of a raid.

They were then alerted to an attempted theft at the Strictly Liquor store across the road.

Dale Byrne, of Falklands Crescent, Wolverhampton, was arrested and then charged with two counts of theft from a shop, two counts of burglary and two counts of assault of a police officer.

The 42-year-old appeared at Walsall Magistrates' Court on Saturday and he has since been released on bail, and he is due to appear again before magistrates on Thursday.

A 53-year-old man has been bailed under investigation until June 27.
