Azad Singh has been sentenced to a minimum of 14 years behind bars

A scorned husband who stabbed his wife to death after catching her with another man in their home has been jailed for life.

Killer Azad Singh lashed out at Kulwinder Kaur, plunging a kitchen knife into her body three times after finding her lover hiding in their 10th-floor flat, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

The 46-year-old looked on emotionless as he was told he would spend at least 14 years behind bars after jurors unanimously convicted him of murder.

Jailing Singh yesterday, Judge James Burbidge QC said the defendant left his wife of 17 years with ‘catastrophic’ injuries after fleeing their home following the brutal attack.

The judge went on to say Singh was ‘clearly in anger’ after discovering his wife’s lover in their home, but added: “I have no doubt that you loved your wife.”

The Pinnacle in Gomer Street, where Singh stabbed his wife to death

Jurors unanimously convicted Singh of killing his 40-year-old wife, known as Rani, after deliberating for two hours and 21 minutes.

During the trial, prosecutor Miss Rachel Brand QC said Singh returned to the Willenhall flat after work, discovering Majinder Virk hiding between his sons’ single beds on January 18.

The murderer then repeatedly punched and kicked 41-year-old Mr Virk before Mrs Kaur opened the front door, helping him escape from the flat in The Pinnacle, Gomer Street. Singh went on to stab his wife in her neck, shoulder and side.

The jury of six men and six women were told Singh and his wife left their home in Italy and came to the UK with their two teenage sons last year before moving to the rented flat last October.

Mrs Kaur was having an affair with colleague Mr Virk.

Defence barrister Mr Jo Sidhu told the court today: “This is not a case where the defendant was nursing a grievance and was looking for an opportunity to act upon it.”

Singh admitted wounding with intent to cause Mr Virk grievous bodily harm on the day of his trial.

Detective Inspector Justin Spanner, from West Midlands Police CID, said: "There can be no justification for Singh’s actions - regardless of the emotions he may have been feeling at the time.

"A family has been tragically ripped apart and will have to live with the consequences of his brutal knife attack forever."
