The crowd had assembled at Walsall Arboretum to take part in the first ever St Giles Hospice Hero Walk.

The walkers made their way around the park along a 5km course, dressed in costumes ranging from Spiderman to Batman and the Incredibles.

It was all in aid of St Giles Hospice, which cares for people with incurable diseases. The hospice has a base at Goscote Lane in Walsall.

Elinor Eustace, director of fundraising, said: "We're absolutely delighted with the success of our first-ever Hero Walk and hope everyone who has enjoyed today will be back next year and will bring their friends.

"The Hero Walk gives people the chance to show that they care in a cape and over 300 people have done just that today - celebrating their own personal heroes, whoever they may be.

"At St Giles our heroes are the people who support our events and especially our dedicated supporters and volunteers who help to ensure that we can continue to provide or care to local patients and their families. We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved."

There was a great effort put into the costumes, with people dressing as other superhero characters including Wonder Woman, Supergirls, Deadpool, and father and son duo who cane as Superman and Captain America.

The walk took people on a whole tour of the arboretum. It is estimated more than 300 people took part.

Hundreds turned out

Along the course, walkers took part in a variety of challenges. These included a spot-the-superhero challenge, striking superhero poses, a word search, and a bean bag-throwing challenge to win sweets.

There was also a memory wall for people to leave the names of loved ones.

The event also featured bouncy castles, food and refreshments, glitter tattoos, cape decoration, stalls and a hook-a-duck challenge.

And walkers also had the opportunity to create their own superhero cut-outs with personal messages to loved ones to leave on the In Memory wall.

The next St Giles event is happening at Tamworth Castle on December 8. The hospice has two other bases in Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield.
