Firefighters rushed to the aid of a woman on the A449 Penn Road, near Waitrose, after she was hit while crossing the road just after 6.30pm.

The woman became trapped in railings in the centre of the road after being involved in a crash with a hatchback, West Midlands Fire Service confirmed.

Firefighters managed to release her using cutting equipment and she was not believed to be seriously injured.

Paramedics were also at the scene and the northbound side of the road was shut in the aftermath of the incident.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 6.34pm to Penn Road.

"An ambulance and paramedic officer attended.

"A woman in her 20s was crossing the road when there was a crash with a car.

"Crews found the car next to the woman, who had her legs through the metal railings.

"She was assessed on scene and thankfully did not suffer serious injuries before being taken to New Cross Hospital for further treatment."
