Wolverhampton pub sealed off by police as man fights for life

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after an incident outside a city-centre pub in Wolverhampton last night.

The Old Still Inn in King Street was sealed off by police after the man was injured shortly before 11pm on Saturday.

The man suffered a serious head injury when he was assaulted outside the pub, West Midlands Police said. He remained in a critical condition on Sunday.

The age and identity of the victim is not yet known but he is understood to have been drinking at the pub before being injured outside.

He was given first aid at the scene by other pub customers before being taken to hospital by paramedics.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault.

King Street, which connects Dudley Street and Princess Street, is closed

The Old Still, which is on the pedestrianised corner of Princess Street and King Street and is popular for karaoke, was closed in the immediate aftermath of the incident and a blue forensic tent remained outside on Sunday morning.

King Street remained closed either side of the pub on Sunday afternoon, with pedestrians unable to get through from Dudley Street or Princess Street.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating after a man was assaulted outside the Old Still pub on King Street, Wolverhampton shortly before 11pm last night.

"He was taken to hospital with a serious head injury and remains in a critical condition.

"A 36-year-old man year old has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody.
