Wolverhampton Grand at 125: Grand cast were milking it for laughs

Shoppers and office workers in Wolverhampton became quite used to seeing actors from the city's Grand Theatre roaming the streets in full costume for a publicity stunt.

And sometimes they found themselves looking into the camera lens themselves, having been persuaded to show a bit of bottle and join in the fun.

On this occasion the cast of a visiting production of Under Milk Wood hijacked milkman David Davies and his float for a light-hearted photo opportunity.

The play, a 1954 radio drama by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas that was commissioned by the BBC and later adapted for the stage, ran at the theatre for a week.

In our picture, taken in 1985, Mr Davies is seen pouring a pint of the white stuff for actor Stephen Reynolds. Also in the image were, left to right: Susie Fugle, Michael Drew, Meryl Hampton, Lyn Rees, Elin Jenkins, John Lavanowski and Malcolm Rennie.

Rumour has it he drove the group back to the Lichfield Street theatre on his float. The photograph is reproduced here as part of the Grand's 125th anniversary celebrations.
