Students seek plaudits from top brass musician
Young musicians will gun for plaudits from a top brass instrumentalist and composer when he calls in to judge a competition at their school in Stafford.
Internationally renowned saxophone player Andy Scott will choose two award-winning performances when youngsters take to the stage at Stafford Grammar’s music festival.
Dozens of pupils aged between 11 and 18-years-old are auditioning for the chance to showcase their talent in front of the VIP guest, with 20 of them making the final cut.
In a career spanning 30 years, Andy has become well-known on the world stage as a soloist and ensemble player, while he also works with several professional orchestras.
The 53-year-old saxophonist features regularly on radio and television and since winning a British composer award in 2006 he has been writing for high profile musicians and groups.
Andy’s visit to Stafford Grammar School on February 25 will include a masterclass where he will lend his expertise in classical, jazz and contemporary styles to up and coming musicians.
Gavin Lamplough, director of music, said: "I have watched Andy’s wonderful career with genuine respect and admiration.
"His work as a saxophonist and composer is inspirational and to have another musician of his calibre attend our annual festival is really exciting and a real treat for our young musicians.
"I’m delighted he will be heading to Stafford earlier in the day to work with our young saxophonists and our saxophone quartet.
"This is a great opportunity for them to spend time with an award-winning performer with an international reputation."
