The Macclesfield group did not disappoint fans from all over the West Midlands who made their way to the county town.

The set featured lots of songs from the band's third album Northern Sun Sessions.

The intimate upstairs concert room at the former Noah's Ark – claimed to be haunted – gave fans the chance to see the band really up close and The Virginmarys' blistering fast-paced songs left many with their ears ringing.

Singer and songwriter Aly Dickaty was in great form, as ever, both vocally and in blasting out the power chords on guitar with drummer Danny Dolan his usual driving force of nature.

Earlier in the evening Wolverhampton duo Broozer opened proceedings with a powerful set, joining the audience to deliver songs from debut EP Are We Dead Yet? right in the face of some startled gig goers.

Haggard Cat – Nottingham duo Matt Reynolds and Tom Marsh – also provided a great rocking warm up for The Virginmarys, including songs from new album Common Sense Holiday.

Queen Elizabeth I, who visited the Crabbery Street building back in 1575, might even have enjoyed the night.
