Falling Sands Viaduct on the Severn Valley Railway is set to have vital restoration work done after more than £1 million was raised to begin the work.

The viaduct is a vital link between Kidderminster and the rest of the line and, at 142-years-old, is in urgent need of repairs, with cracks and erosion from water damage.

The work means no trains will run between Bewdley and Kidderminster from December 30 until the work is completed.

The Severn Valley Railway Charitable Trust’s ‘Helping Hands for Falling Sands’ appeal attracted thousands of donations and raised more than £397,000 in ten months towards the cost of the essential repairs.

This was then boosted by a further £925,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

After the last Festive Season Service on January 5th, the Railway will close for its annual repair and maintenance period, re-opening again in February half-term, when services will run between Bewdley and Bridgnorth.
