Richard Simkin, one of the owners at the Bognop Road site, said: “The pumpkins got off to a shaky start because they were planted in June and the weather was very cold and wet. But as it it warmed up, they started to grow. We’ve got some decent pumpkins.”

Mr Simkin, whose grandson Thomas is also getting stuck in with the pumpkins, added: “I don’t think there’s so many in numbers because the conditions weren’t so good. But the ones we’ve got are good quality – and we are anxious for the rain to stop so we can harvest them because it gets wet and muddy.”

He added: “They are quite a difficult crop to grow, really.

“There’s all sorts of things to look out for and you’re biting your fingernails about the weather because it can turn against you.

“But it’s always nice to see the end of the season and to see the crops harvested and sold.”

The farm is open from 9am to 5pm for people to pick a pumpkin, up until Halloween.
