Track Talk: Leon’s looking like being the new champion

It's Germany this weekend for round seven of the FIM World Championship.

And I do believe it’s looking increasingly like we could have a new Danish world champion. Leon Madsen’s rise to the top of the standings has been remarkable, the kind of stuff fairytales are made of.

He’s been having treatment for the last fortnight after injuries sustained in a Polish League meeting, which means he has pain down the right-hand side of his body. But he’s made of tough stuff and his performance in Malilla a fortnight ago was remarkable.

It’s his title to lose from here.

Monday night is crunch night again for Wolverhampton.

Parrys International Wolves face King’s Lynn at Monmore in another ‘must-win’ meeting as they hunt down the fourth and final play-off place available.

If they do make it, then it will mark the most remarkable surge to a play-off place for some years.

King’s Lynn have a powerhouse spearhead in Robert Lambert and Craig Cook – but over 15 races I would expect Wolverhampton to win. In fact, I think their trip to Peterborough could be the decider for Peter Adams and his side.

Belle Vue go to Peterborough on Thursday and they’ll be targeting four league points, which would then put the pressure back on Wolves for their visit.

It’s fascinating and, with a break in TV meetings until September 9, the league table will become a lot clearer by then.

It’s going to be hectic with the BT Sport team because we are scheduled to cover the last two weeks of the league season and then every play-off meeting – that’s four semi-finals and two final legs. Six shows in three weeks to round off our coverage. Plus we will have the culmination of the Grand Prix series.

Speaking of which, I can heartily recommend a cracking weekend for all the family.

On Friday, September 20 it’s the Championship Pairs at Somerset, which is likely to include Wolves stars Rory Schlein, Nick Morris, Kyle Howarth and Sam Masters. The following night it’s the British Grand Prix at Cardiff – two cracking meetings in as many days.

I’d suggest going to Somerset (the track is near Burnham-on-Sea) and staying in a guest house there before heading across to Cardiff for the 5pm Saturday event. You don’t even need a mega expensive Cardiff hotel as you can be back in the West Midlands by 11pm on the Saturday.

Food for thought...
