Neil Mitchell looking for a positive response

Director of rugby Neil Mitchell has demanded more cohesiveness after ‘lacklustre’ Stourbridge fell to a 41-19 defeat at Fylde.

Mitchell feels Stour have been less than the sum of their parts so far, with this result leaving them with three wins and three losses in National Two North.

And he is looking for a massive response against bottom-of-the-table Scunthorpe, who have lost all six of their matches this term, on Saturday.

“We were pretty poor to be fair, especially up front,” said Mitchell.

“We’ve got the top try scorer in the division in Dan Rundle, but we just didn’t compete with Fylde. They deserved the win.

“It was a huge disappointment and I did not waste any time in telling the lads my feelings.

“We have got a very good squad this year, but we have not yet played all that well as a unit.

“The side is stronger than it was last year, but we need to be cohesive.”

Stourbridge caught Fylde cold with two early Rundle tries, the first following a good break by George Morgan down the left-hand wing and the second with a cross-field run. Both were converted by Chris Scott to make the score 0-14 with 12 minutes played. But by the break, Fylde were 26-14 up.

A converted try from the hosts came in the 65th minute, and then Reece Beddows got one of his own for Stour – unconverted.

Then, Fylde scored a penalty and followed up with a final try with a missed conversion, making the final score 41-19.

“I cannot really put my finger on it at the moment,” said Mitchell.

“We’ll see what sort of reaction we get this weekend at home against bottom of the league, Scunthorpe.

“I got these lads in to improve the team if they do not do that, I might just have to take another look at it.”
